George Condo works in a style he’s referred to as “Artificial Realism,” blending Old Masters style paintings with current day American cultural influence. He references these older artists/paintings without copying them.
Condo’s work is recognizable as a little ~freaky~. As Spruth Magers (gallery that represents him) describes it: they are “dystopian, yet empathic take on humanity and our time. His oeuvre teems with cartoonish portraits, grotesque grimaces, absurd group sex scenes and detached, oddly animated body parts. In his dark, psychological landscapes, beauty and horror usually go hand in hand, and his damaged figures thrive on melodrama, seesawing between seduction and rejection.”
You might recognize him from his pop culture involvement - he did the art for Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album (which was sensored by iTunes), and last year designed the invitations for Michael Rubin’s annual white party.
